Actor and former WWE star, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, has bought the XFL for roughly $15 million.
The purchase was made together with his ex-wife Dany Garcia, and private investment firm RedBird Capital Partners.
"With pride and gratitude for all that I’ve built with my own two hands, I plan to apply these callouses to the XFL," Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
The professional American football league originally ran for a single season back in 2001.
It was set up by World Wrestling Entertainment’s chairman Vince McMahon.
McMahon invested $200 million in restarting the league in 2020.
However, the XFL was unable to survive after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down professional sports earlier in the year.
The league saw an average of 3 million viewers in its first week, a number that had halved by the time it was shut down.
The XFL’s new owners have not said when they plan to restart the league.
This is a Hollywood ending to our sale process, and it is an exciting new chapter for the league, Jeffrey Pollack, XFL’s president
